Life Expectancy in Canada: Key Findings from New Study
Canada is known for its high quality of life, reflected in an average life expectancy of a little over 80 years.
However, where Canadians live plays a significant role in how long they live.
A recent study by Preszler Injury Lawyers, featured on the HGTV portal, analyzed Statistics Canada data to rank all 13 provinces and territories, uncovering notable differences in life expectancy based on region and gender.
Quebec emerges as the top province for life expectancy, with residents living an average of 82.5 years—slightly above the national average which is 81.3. Men in Quebec have the highest male life expectancy in the country at 80.8 years, while women rank second at 84.2 years, just behind British Columbia’s 84.3 years.
Ontario also ranks highly, with an average life expectancy of 81.8 years. Women in Ontario can expect to live 84.1 years on average, while men have a slightly lower average lifespan of 79.6 years. These numbers highlight the benefits of accessible healthcare systems in these regions.
In stark contrast, Nunavut has the lowest life expectancy at just 71.7 years, with the Northwest Territories following at 75.4 years. These figures point to significant challenges in delivering healthcare services to remote and underserved areas.
The study underscores how access to healthcare and regional priorities shape longevity. Provinces like Quebec and Ontario benefit from well-established healthcare systems that contribute to healthier, longer lives. Meanwhile, the struggles faced by remote territories emphasize the urgent need to address healthcare disparities across the country.
Canada’s life expectancy varies widely, ranging from 72 to 82 years, but the findings highlight an important truth: where you live can profoundly impact how long you live. By addressing these disparities, Canada can work toward ensuring all its citizens enjoy the same opportunities for a long and healthy life.
